Beats Basics - Jenn Mallek
Beats Basics - Jenn Mallek
Silks & Rope - Intermediate
Sunday 2p-330p (TH)
In this workshop, we will explore the fundamentals behind beats in various directions and with varying degrees of rotation. Our focus will be on finding our precious moment of float: that brief, weightless pause where transitions become seamless and energy is conserved. You’ll learn to harness and control your momentum so as to generate power and flow graciously through the air. The goal is to build a solid foundation so that you may float like a feather, not drop like a stone. This way, more complex release moves and dynamic transitions will come easier in the future. Participants may choose to work on silks, rope, or a combination of both.
Pre-Requisites: must be able to do shoulder shrugs off the ground and 1 clean pull up
My aerial journey began on Thanksgiving 2016, when I bought a Groupon for a flying trapeze experience, not thinking much of it. That first flight left me completely invigorated. In early December, I took my first silks class, and there was no looking back. The combination of flow, beauty, and the intellectual complexity that silks offer had me instantly hooked.
Since then, I’ve expanded into other circus disciplines including straps, handstands, and occasional dabbles with other fun apparatus, but aerial silks will always be my first and greatest love.
By day, I work as an anesthesiologist, where I get to combine my natural aptitude for science, physiology, and pharmacology with my love of helping people feel safe, seen, and free from pain. I bring that same care and awareness into my teaching, blending medical insight with creative exploration to help students train safely, have fun, and the body awareness and strength needed for longevity in their aerial practice.
