Aerial costumes are their own species! We will discuss & have samples of what to look for in an aerial costume, types of fabrics to use, embellishments, how to sew with stretch fabrics, what kinds of stitches, threads, and where to source materials. We will also look at function and design as well as fabrication techniques. This workshops will be more lecture and show & tell than hands on.
Cathy has been sewing for 48 years and making costumes since high school. Having her own aerial dance company and performing for years, she’s made countless costumes for herself and others and learned helpful techniques along the way. Blue costume design by Jerry Jackson
Lauraleigh aka MaQi is a magical human and healer that approaches the aerial art form through ethereal storytelling. Her roots as a performer were born as a ground and fire dancer with Lunar fire and kanal. She continues to weave stories with Lunar Fire and now also with Fractal Tribe. Her vision for her magical creative world led her to design one of a kind apparatuses such as the aerial lotus, dream catcher and chandelier. She also custom make all her own costumes. She has also been the Performance Coordinator for a few festivals such as Sonic Bloom ARISE, and Envision. She has had the opportunity to world with some amazing musicians such as Shpongle, Michael Franti, and Elephant Revival to name a few, and has performed at Red Rocks a number of times. Her goal a performer is to be able to inspire the audience to believe they have the power live their dreams and make a difference in the world.
